Sex Causes Headaches in Some, Cures Others
The connection between sex and headaches has long been known. We”ve long written about how sex tends to cure a wide range of ailments. Indeed, we can trace this history back to Hippocrates, who first demonstrated this. However, it wasn”t until the late 1960s and early 1970s that doctors formally documented this connection in medical reports.

Since then, several cases have been reported in the medical literature describing two distinct types of headaches caused by sex. The first type is intensified by sexual arousal—it begins as a dull ache in the head and neck and intensifies during sexual activity. The second type, often called “explosive,” occurs during orgasm and is very sudden and intense. In a 2013 article published in the journal Cephalagia, researchers surveyed hundreds of headache clinic patients about the connection between sexual experience and headaches. They found that migraine-prone individuals avoid sexual activity when they already have a headache. However, about a third of them reported having sexual intercourse during a migraine attack.

Headaches During Sex
In other words, those who believe that sex alleviates migraines may intentionally seek sexual activity to relieve symptoms. This suggests that the relationship between sex and headaches is more complex than previously thought.
