What is this?

Let’s start with the fact that a woman’s vagina actually goes through a lot—menstruation, childbirth, and sex. Not to mention hormonal imbalances and all sorts of pelvic floor issues! Yes, sometimes women have a hard time.

Vaginal steam baths (stimulation) are designed to cleanse the vagina and uterus, regulate cycles, and relieve menstrual cramps and bloating. This procedure is not new. Thanks to Gwyneth Paltrow and her website Goop, it has received a new lease of life (by the way, Gwyneth is a very interesting and creative person. Somehow, she managed to release a vagina-scented candle).

But is this procedure’s popularity justified? Do such experiments harm the vagina? Now we’ll find out.

How does it work?

During the procedure, a stream of herbal-infused steam is directed into the vagina. However, it’s only performed in certain high-end spas and is quite expensive. You can also experiment at home (although doctors don’t recommend it) – simply squat over a basin of herbal steam.

The procedure uses the following herbs, both individually and in combination.

  • Wormwood;
  • Chamomile;
  • Calendula;
  • Basil;
  • Oregano.

Most salons use a special sheet (Gwyneth calls it a “throne”) with holes through which steam can pass.

If you decide to steam at home, use the following procedure (but read the entire article first).

  • Fill a basin with hot water and add a cup of your chosen herbs;
  • Let the herbs steep for at least a minute;
  • Remove your clothes;
  • Squat over the basin;
  • Wrap a towel around your waist and legs to prevent steam from escaping.

This procedure usually takes 20 to 60 minutes. It all depends on the temperature of the water and how quickly it cools.

According to the proponents of this procedure, vaginal stimulation is a universal treatment for virtually all ailments. Steam baths (supposedly) relieve stress and depression, help combat hemorrhoids, infections, infertility, headaches, fatigue, hormonal imbalances, and digestive problems. It’s an impressive list.

However, there is currently no scientific evidence that vaginal steam baths actually help relieve specific ailments. Jan Gunther of OB/GYN discusses the trendy procedure on his website, but questions how the herbal steam penetrates the uterus through the tightly closed cervix and into the vagina.

Currently, there is also a lack of research confirming the safety of stimulation. One thing is clear: the vagina was not originally intended for this procedure. An overheated vagina is an ideal breeding ground for yeast and other bacteria that cause infections. Furthermore, the skin of the vagina is very delicate and sensitive and can be easily damaged.

Why do you need yoni stim and how to make it?

No doctor would recommend a procedure with questionable effectiveness and safety. Yes, there are well-researched and truly beneficial alternative treatments. However, vaginal stimulation has nothing to do with them. Therefore, you should think twice (or thrice) before following Gwyneth Paltrow’s example and trying unsafe spa treatments at home.

IMPORTANT: The effects of steam baths on a pregnant woman and her baby are unknown. If you are currently pregnant, do not use this or any other folk remedy without consulting a doctor.

Personal Experience

A journalist named Jamie Feldmar decided to try the trendy treatment himself and went to a spa in Korea. Here’s what happened:

First, they told me to take off my clothes and put on a huge, shapeless robe. It didn’t even have sleeves; everything was tied at the neck. It looked like a giant candy bar from “Hershe’s Kisses.” Then I was ordered to sit on a chair with a hole in the middle. Beneath the hole in the chair was a portable burner heating a cauldron of medicinal herbs.

The concoction was hot, and the steam swirled around my exposed genital area. Soon, I began to steam later. I tried to let in some cool air and lift the sheet wrapped around me so the steam could reach its target. But then I relaxed—the procedure isn’t all that unpleasant—and the time passed much faster. After 30 minutes, I became frustrated. “You could have sat for another 15 minutes,” I thought.

This all took place at a 24-hour Korean spa in New Jersey called King Spa, but it’s not the only practice there. For example, Gwyneth Paltrow promoted vaginal steaming on Goop in 2015 and recommended Tikun Holistic Spa in Los Angeles. She claimed that these steam baths “cleanse the uterus” and “release energy.” Korean salons offering this service can be found in Chicago, New York, and California. At-home steaming kits are available for purchase at some online retailers.

Vaginal steaming is said to help with literally everything—from restoring a normal menstrual cycle to relieving the effects of arthritis. However, the origins of this procedure are unknown—some believe it was invented in Korea, while others point to South America or Africa. The basic principle of steaming is to stimulate circulation in the pelvic floor, which dilates blood vessels, oxygenates the tissues, and relaxes the pelvic floor muscles. However, doctors are skeptical of this procedure and are reluctant to endorse it.

That’s all I can say: it’s not a good idea. There’s currently little scientific evidence that vaginal steaming actually works. However, if you want to try it out, there’s nothing wrong with finding one and sitting on some hot herbs for half an hour. At least you’ll have an interesting story to tell.”
