The film takes place in Italy in 1983, when Elio (Timothée Chalam) falls in love with his father, the charismatic Oliver (Armie Hammer), a graduate student. Elio and Oliver are wary of each other at first, but over time they begin to grow closer, leading to a romantic relationship between them.
