- Bisexuality is a reality. Many people deny the existence of bisexuality and believe that everyone who identifies as bisexual is secretly gay or lesbian. However, research shows that bisexuality involves different patterns of sexual interest and arousal than homosexuality.
- Women are more likely to identify as bisexual than men. Several national surveys conducted in the United States found that 2. 6% of men identify as bisexual, compared to 3. 6% of women.
- Bisexual people are not necessarily more sexually active than others. One of the most common stereotypes about bisexuals is that they are very sexually active. However, research shows that bisexuals” sexual desire is in the same range as people of other sexual orientations. Specifically, the Sexual Desire Index (on a 7-point scale) was 5. 47, 5. 28, and 5. 26 for heterosexuals, bisexuals, and gay men, respectively.
- Bisexuality does not necessarily mean that a person is equally attracted to both men and women. Bisexuality implies the ability to experience attraction to both men and women, but attraction to each gender does not necessarily have to be equally strong. Furthermore, bisexuals may prefer more attractive sexual partners throughout life, but a partner of the opposite sex can act as an additional arousal.
