Taking oral contraceptives affects a woman”s choice of husband

Women taking oral contraceptives during this period usually choose less attractive men as sexual partners. The results of an unusual scientific study were published in the journal Psychological Science. The study involved 2, 519 women from the USA, Czech Republic, UK and Canada. Each of them had at least one child.

More than half of the participants did not use OCs during the time they knew their spouse. And about 1, 000 more women took these drugs during the first meeting with their future husbands.
“The results of our study confirm both the positive and negative consequences of women taking OCs at the beginning of a relationship,” said Craig Roberts of the University of Stirling, Scotland, lead author of the study.

Psychologists offer their explanation of this blonde phenomenon — for a long time the media stubbornly drummed into our heads that it was blondes.
“Women who [take OCs] are less satisfied with the sexual aspects of their lives with partners. However, they are more satisfied with other unexpected qualities than women who did not use this method of contraception,” explains Craig. Overall, those who take October live longer and are less likely to want to break up.”
Craig Roberts suspects that oral contraceptives change the biochemistry that influences a woman”s choice of sexual partner. This also requires explanation, but he had previously found that OC distorts women”s preferences for male body odors.

Based on the results of the study, we can conclude that women taking OCs do not experience a natural hormonal surge. For this reason, they are more likely to reject sexual advances and choose long-term partners among gentle and caring men who are genetically similar to them (decreased sexual interest). Women who do not use this method of contraception are more likely to choose genetically different men based on sexual attraction.
