Love lives for three years — the content of the book and film. Is the statement true?

Love Lives for Three Years” is a novel by the French prose writer Frederic Beigbeder. The title did not come out of nowhere — it is not a worship of the magical number three, not a term taken from the catchphrase bulldozer, not a French fiction. The wonderful story told in the book is based on the “three-year crisis” — a theory widely known in the world of psychology that associates increased emotions with normal hormone levels.

The plot is similar to most French films — the sweetness of mutual love, similar to the taste of a fresh croissant from the nearest bakery, masks the darkness of the human mind, which expects dirty tricks from happiness, just as we expect from a torrent. It rains on the very day when we relax and leave the house without an umbrella.
Unfortunately, the main character of the novel is a man of a very creative profession — the poor guy works as a journalist. Marc Marronier provides the public with news from his social life. An unshakable confidence in the transience of happiness has taken root in his mind, and therefore an eternal expectation of dirty tricks.
Mark is convinced that love lasts not a year, but three years — every romance begins with passion, floating without paying attention to everything around, like a surfer riding a wave that is not given to anyone else. Then the wave gives way to kindness, which ends in sadness — boredom. That”s it. The passion is gone. Peace has come. Like a tasteless tortilla without substance, it is boring, tasteless and dull.
How did Mark gain such confidence? It”s all about his life experience. Our friend has never loved anyone for more than three years. Is it unrequited love and sadness to love a friend who said a fateful goodbye? Do you retain your feelings through years and distances? Do you look at your loved one with tenderness and live hand in hand until old age? No, these sweet stories are not about Mark. Other banks maintain their quality longer than Maroni retains his love for women.
Fate brought our journalist together with Anna. How many men have experienced this happiness — the love of a beautiful woman?
Mark”s happiness was short-lived. The third year of his relationship with dear Anna is approaching, and here the law of “three-year love” comes into force — the spouses no longer evoke passion, tenderness and awe. She no longer excites as a woman or inspires as a muse. She doesn”t do anything anymore. Love can develop into constant hostility.

And now a new heroine, Alice, appears on the pages of the book, saturated with the musty smell of a fed-up relationship.
Our Mark”s heart is completely free, and he loses his head because he fell in love with this woman. This man was also lucky — he found reciprocity. However, the couple never had the opportunity to meet openly and shamelessly shared details of their personal life with acquaintances — Alice was already in a relationship and shared her life with another person. Thus, the lovers” meetings took place under the cover of secrecy.
Mark completely surrenders to this relationship and does not enjoy the happiness of love — the calendar hangs over his head like a sword of Damocles, tirelessly counting down the hours. The lovers do not pay attention to the clock. It”s true, but poor Maroni doesn”t know. His mind, completely focused on the idea that love lives for three proverbial years, does not indulge in reflection. The time of reckoning will come. Retribution for past passionate feelings. His firm belief in the theory of short-term passion prepares him in advance for emotional cooling and breakup.
At the end of the novel, Mark notes the fact that he is dreading his approaching third anniversary, but his feelings for Alice have not yet faded. From his mind, obsessed with logic and laws, a critical view of things begins to flow. In the end, he comes to the conclusion that he has boxed himself in and that his theories are ridiculous.
After all, here we are — three years later, and love is still alive!
But, after all, three years have not yet passed. The watch dial indicates that a minute separates the lovers from the terrible date.
Film
Unusual, controversial or entertaining books for handkerchief makers remain untouched by the warlike hands of filmmakers. Frederic Beigbeder”s book lacks cinematic purity. And by Frederick himself.

When I meet older couples who walk, I am amazed at how they have carried their love with them through the years and maintained a warm relationship. What”s happened.
The novel was rewritten in 1997 and filmed worldwide on December 10, 2011, and in Russia on May 10, 2012.
Besides being Frederic”s brainchild, he bore a special responsibility for the film adaptation, as the novel is also replete with moments from his autobiography.
Critics (professional and otherwise) met the film with neither reverence nor admiration. On Kinopoisk and IMDb, users rated the film a 6. Some disliked the on-screen rendering of literary metaphors, others found the humor lacking, and still others were offended by the excessive liberties, including the depiction of non-traditional relationships.

Still from the film “Love Lives for Three Years”
At the same time, many were pleased with everything about the film—the acting, the theme of love, the editing, the honesty, and other elements of a good film.
But this is precisely why we love famous films based on famous books—the opportunity to compare two realities, to compete with the director in imagination and sensuality, to see the story in our heads differently. For the opportunity to be surprised once again by how differently people perceive the same events, emotions, and thoughts. Expand your worldview and see everyday things from a different perspective.
That”s why movies with controversial ratings are so good—you can side with one camp, critics and enthusiasts be damned. Or organize yourself—combining the satisfaction, resentment, bitterness, irritation, admiration, and awe you felt after watching. Great food has an interesting aftertaste, so a bouquet of emotions is good because it reveals different sides of a story. By experiencing different emotions and feelings and combining them in unusual combinations, we learn to think, feel, and act unconventionally, like gourmets.
Psychology
It”s written on a very serious and sensitive topic, so we can”t admire the actors” cute faces or giggle at the corny jokes on camera.

We are adults (even if some of our actions are the exact opposite) and must learn to seek solutions rather than run away from problems.
By the way, we shouldn”t create our own problems either. Love Lives for Three Years (a novel by Frédéric Beigbeder)

Where does this theory come from?
Where do legs grow from?
Our perception is influenced primarily by our personal experience, as well as the experience of our environment. Surely each of you has a friend, girlfriend, brother or sister, acquaintance or acquaintance who could not be present in a relationship for more than three years. Yesterday you saved money for your girlfriend”s wedding, and today you spent a lot on a bottle of wine, trying to make her get over the sadness of breaking up. These examples are so close that even those who have not considered the “three years” theory are starting to think about it.
The legs here grow from the head (psychology) and hormones. I liked it at first and it really went to my head. Happiness, joy, euphoria — compared to human addiction to alcohol or drugs, love is two and two.

The similarity is obvious — you feel good, calm and stimulated when your “drug” is nearby. As soon as you stop seeing the “drug”, the color disappears, and not how the taste of your favorite dish dulls and the feeling of well-being is trampled in the inexorable melancholy of not being able to get through. Has anyone quit smoking after years of smoking? A relapse is like getting up in the middle of the night, ready to run for new peace of mind.
New relationships open the door to emotionally brighter and richer us in a world dominated by hormones. We are fueled by this dietary supplement, we are bubbling with happiness and holding hands with the object of our passion.
However, after a certain time (about three years, the same), the production of hormones stabilizes. We do not squeak from objects of a certain kind of passion, but crazy passion fades away. However, the waves of passion washed ashore depend on the partners themselves.
If they have been enjoying each other”s bodies for the past three years and have not established an emotional connection, if they have gotten rid of the rose-colored glasses, they suddenly find flaws in their partner, troubles that they did not sign up for.

Love at three years old is not a myth, not a guillotine, and not a guide to action for relationships. If passion and sex are the only things that connect you to your partner, the relationship is truly over and very ugly. Lovers who have been able to grow close and build strong trust over the past three years can celebrate their fifth, tenth or fiftieth wedding anniversary.
The three-year anniversary can be filled with passion, revealing truths that the partner was unaware of. Over time, human traits become less endearing—some become normal, while others become downright annoying. If you don”t learn to be patient with them, the relationship won”t last three months.
Psychology books may give you the tools to do the job, but none of them will do the work for you.
