What is meant by the term “satiriasis”
Satyriasis is a condition that has long been considered a disease. According to the ideas of the time, satyriasis was characterized as an obsessive male sexual desire and physical sexual transformation that could last for months or years. For some people, this condition persists for the rest of their lives. To date, satyriasis has been excluded from the list of diseases. Nowadays, this term is called increased sexual desire in men. Sexologists also identify another term — male nymphomania. The basis of satyriasis is excessive sexual desire, regardless of the presence or absence of an object of adoration or a method of satisfaction. Behaviorally, men are determined by frequent changes of sexual partners, inability and unwillingness to enter into monogamous relationships, and refusal to marry.
Causes of satyriasis
In some men, certain psychological factors may contribute to this disorder. For example, feelings of inferiority, childhood abuse, incorrect and inappropriate sex education. In some cases, men who fail in bed the first time they have sex also suffer from the complex. The latter takes representatives of the stronger sex from one extreme to the other.
Failure is like a blow to the human ego. To return to a normal sex life, men try to have sex more often. Such sensual sexual intercourse serves as a sip of water and helps improve a man’s intimate life. Based on the totality of mental, neurological and hormonal disorders, the following causes of satyriasis can be identified:
- Mania (manic-depressive syndrome). Most often it appears in people suffering from schizoid personality and schizophrenia. Increased libido is inherently pathological, and having sex combines rigidity, aggressiveness and disregard for the interests of the partner.
- Brain diseases: hypothalamic tumors, traumatic brain injuries, encephalitis, meningitis, vascular diseases of the brain.
- Endocrine disorders: hyperfunction of the adrenal cortex, imbalance of gonadal hormones, tumors of the endocrine system.
- Homosexuality. Orientation can interfere with the normal flow of intimate life between partners. Lack of satisfaction from homosexual relationships can serve as an incentive to satyriasis.

According to sexologists, more than 75% of the causes of satyriasis can be attributed to childhood trauma and unsuccessful sexual experiences. The remaining percentages include physical illness and traumatic brain injury.
Symptoms of satyriasis
Satyriasis appears in both adolescents and adult men. Teenage desire for an active sexual life rarely requires the intervention of a psychologist or sexologist, as it is rarely considered pathological. The danger of satyriasis
Men suffering from satyriasis may have unsuccessful relationships and a poor public image. Additionally, their ability to maintain strong relationships may be weakened, which could make their situation even worse. Further serious consequences of satirism:
- Constant stimulation, anxiety, embarrassment and uncertainty.
- Sexually transmitted diseases: syphilis, AIDS, HIV, other diseases.
- Mental disorders: isolation, restriction, bipolar disorder, aggression.
Particularly dangerous complications of satirism include the desire for rape and murder for the sake of sexual gratification.
Is it treatable?
There is no universal treatment for satyriasis. Specialists conduct symptomatic and etiopathic treatment aimed at changing or eliminating the causes of sexual deviations. Conservative treatment for satyriasis involves the following stages:
- Stage 1: Hormonal therapy. At this stage, men are prescribed medications (lithium, benzodiazepines) that reduce testosterone levels. Antidepressants and antipsychotics are also prescribed.
- Stage 2: Psychotherapeutic treatment. Both group and individual consultations are available, including psychoanalysis and behavioral therapy. In some cases, patients are prescribed yoga therapy and meditation.
Symptoms of caricature can manifest in otherwise healthy men and women. However, the perceived masculinity and heightened sexual desire are only beneficial at first glance. Without treatment, some couples end up together because they cannot satisfy each other”s needs and are unable to find a new partner.
