Who can be classified as representatives of sexual minorities?

Gender and Sexual Minorities (GSM) A minority is a person who self-identifies as having a non-typical sexual orientation and/or a non-typical gender identity. Typical refers to heterosexual and cisgender identities. Today, the main concentration of such people is the LGBT community.

Today, the LGBT community has achieved the status of a full-fledged social movement and has a diverse and multifaceted population. The people who make up this part of the population have recently become more visible, involved and mobilized.

The history of gender identity and transgender people resonates with the history of homosexuality and sexual orientation and contrasts strongly with the context of historical events. The inclusion of gender identity disorder (GID) in 1980 drew criticism from members of the transgender community, who believed that classifying gender expression as a symptom of a mental disorder would lead to further stigma and discrimination.

Others believe that without a formal diagnosis, access to emergency and surgical care will be limited. It is worth noting that the latest World Health Organization International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) considers gender dysphoria to be a sexual health disorder rather than a mental disorder.

Stigma, discrimination and criminalization experienced by sexual and gender minorities negatively impact health and are a major cause of health inequalities.

The institutions, attitudes and perceptions of societies that stigmatize sexual and gender minorities have important implications for the ability of public health to meet their needs.

As a result, public health may find it more difficult to reach CSFs, creating challenges for health surveillance and the development of tailored and culturally sensitive health interventions.

Sexual orientation

Often the term “SEX” is applied to people who are not heterosexual. Key representatives of this community:

  • Gays are males or male-identified individuals who are attracted to others of the same sex
  • Lesbians — similar to gays, but refers to people who are female or identify as such
  • Bisexuals are people who are sexually attracted to members of either gender.
  • Undecided are people who are “in search of their identity.”

Many people identify with the term “queer”. Queer is an umbrella term for all non-typical genders. The term is still considered offensive to many people, but it should not be used as an umbrella term for the entire community and should not be used by cisgender heterosexuals.

The word “kink” can often be heard from girls who joke with their very playful and liberated partners. What is actually possible?

Another interesting sexual minority is MSM. These are men who have sex with men but do not consider themselves homosexual or bisexual. For them it is either an experiment or something else, but in most cases there is no attraction.

Issues of identity are very difficult for some people. Some people change several times in their lives, discovering something new and abandoning the old. People who regularly change direction in their search for themselves or are attracted to people regardless of their gender or direction are called pansexual.

In addition to the above, there is another special group: people without sexual desire, or asexuals. Asexuals usually prefer romance to sexual pleasure.

Relationship between gender identity and sex characteristics

There are also transgender people among GSM representatives. Transgender people change their social status, names, pronouns, and gender expression. Some transgender people undergo medical “transition” by taking hormones or undergoing gender reassignment surgery. Some transgender people identify as non-binary.

Another group of sexual minorities are intersex people, who, as a result of birth or development, have anatomical sex characteristics that are neither male nor female, or have a combination of male and female characteristics.

Many intersex people are surgically deformed at birth or without parental permission. Intersex activists are now pushing to ban these life-threatening surgeries, which can lead to sensory loss, sexual dysfunction and other chronic diseases.

Drug addiction among minorities

Despite the fact that some atypical orientations are already quite common and widely accepted in developed societies, research has shown a direct relationship between such orientations and stress levels.

It has been found that identity itself gets people into trouble. Perhaps this is due to the fact that such people feel like “black sheep” in society, they are afraid and expect censure even in tolerant circles. As you already understand, increased stress levels lead to the appearance of drugs.

The past few years have seen an unprecedented increase in awareness and acceptance of people identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and other GSM groups.

More recently, researchers have begun to focus on the actual experiences of people belonging to BMS in the health care system. Therefore, minority stress theory can be applied to the conclusion that these groups are less likely to seek necessary and ongoing health care. This may largely be due to the fear and mistrust experienced in the medical community and in general in an intolerant society.

Recently, researchers have begun to look beyond traditional fields and look at DBS-induced health conditions more holistically. In particular, researchers are now also recognizing many other pressing public health consequences beyond the sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), drug use, and mental health that have been reported in the traditional medical literature about DBS.
