Scientists” Conclusions

Researchers from the University of Tennessee (USA) decided to determine whether a person”s first sexual experience actually influences their subsequent satisfaction with their sex life. “We wanted to know how losing virginity affects emotional and physical development,” explains Matthew Shaffer, one of the principal investigators.

According to Shaffer and his colleagues, based on the results obtained, it”s safe to say that initial sexual experience significantly determines the likelihood of both physical and emotional satisfaction in a relationship. Specifically, love and respect from a partner during a first sexual experience were associated with a more emotionally satisfying sex life in the future.

How the Surveys Were Conducted

331 participants (boys and girls) participated in the anonymous study. They reported when and how they had sex and their subsequent sexual experiences. Those who felt the most emotionally and physically satisfied their first time reported greater satisfaction in future relationships.

The same respondents who experienced severe anxiety during their first sexual encounter subsequently had an unfulfilling sex life. They lost their virginity without any special preparation. For example, some of them flaunted their health. This is explained by the fact that their first encounter occurred at a youth party and without a condom.

These adults reported less enjoyment in their sex lives later in life. This group of respondents didn”t even describe their relationships with their full-time partners as satisfactory. Each respondent noted at least three or four items indicating their partner wasn”t right for them.

“This study can”t prove that first sex is 100% decisive, but the experience of losing virginity can set a pattern of sexual behavior for many years,” explains Schaffer. “First sex seems to set the tone for subsequent actions and understanding of sexuality.
