Focus on sensation exercises
Set a timer for 8 minutes (preferably one that doesn”t light up!)
- Sit in a comfortable position for 10 minutes. Do not cross your arms or legs unless you are sitting on a meditation cushion.
- Start the timer.
- Close your eyes and become aware of your breathing. Without trying to change your breathing in any way, pay attention to the duration of inhalation and exhalation. Become curious.
- Tune in to the slight movements that occur with your breathing, such as the rise and fall of your belly or the feeling of expansion/relaxation in your chest.
- Now pay attention to one place in your body, say the back of your hand. Focus on any sensations you feel there, such as tension, warmth, vibration, pain, pulling, and even numbness.
- For the next few minutes, focus all your attention on this single area. Notice how it feels to give him your full attention without asking him to change it — just like you would love a small child or an animal that climbed into your lap. If you are distracted by a thought or emotion, notice it and then gently bring your awareness back to the sensation.
- When the timer goes off, slowly open your eyes. Take another minute to notice what has changed for you. Do you feel quieter or more relaxed? How is this the place you are giving your full attention to now? Is it buzzing, hot, cold, less stressed, more awake?
As you go into your day, be curious about what”s going on.
How”s your energy? Is it harder or easier to achieve your goal? Can you stay connected to what you feel in your body and enjoy whatever sensations arise? Most importantly, pay attention. Do you feel more connected and open to your partner? If you find yourself speeding or distracted, no problem! Use this awareness as an opportunity to stop, take a breath, focus on the sensation in your body, and start again! If you follow this practice every day, you will soon be able to rekindle intimacy in your relationship.
