Absurd sexual fantasies: they”re more popular than they seem

The fifth edition of the Diagnostic Manual of Mental Disorders for North American Psychologists focuses exclusively on abnormal sexual fantasies. The World Health Organization”s guidelines provide similarly mixed information about paraphilias.
Christian Joyal, a senior researcher at the University of Montreal, said in an interview that they are usually associated with various scenes of violence with opposing partners. Or other types of sexual intimacy that cause unpleasant experiences in one of the fantasy characters. But what else can be classified as unusual or atypical fictional scenes?
Study details
Joyal and his colleagues conducted a survey among the Canadian population. The study involved 799 men and 718 women from Quebec, with an average age of 30 years. Respondents were asked to describe their sexual fantasies in a questionnaire and talk about which ones satisfied them most.
Common and unusual imaginary scenes
The results showed that a large number of different sexual fantasies are common among the population. Those phenomena that were previously considered “rare” or “unusual” have statistically turned out to be more common than generally believed.
Researchers give several examples of such “rare” fantasies. These included sex with children and animals, urination, cross-dressing, sex with prostitutes and sexual intercourse while intoxicated. At the same time, people experiencing them are mentally healthy and never strive to make these ideas come true.
In addition to these paraphilias, fantasies known as “typical” were also popular among respondents. These include sex in a romantic setting, intercourse with two or three partners, and oral sex.

Joyal also points out that one of the most interesting results of the study relates to the identification of fantasies that are typically “masculine.” For example, these include scenes of anal sex and images of a partner having sex with another man.
Evolutionary biological theories don”t explain this range of fantasies, says Christian. “What exactly causes the appearance of men remains unclear? Perhaps subsequent research will shed light on its nature and explain what still remains unclear.”
Fantasy combinations
The researchers believe that these findings will shed light on some social phenomena. For example, about the fact that the book “50 Shades of Gray” is incredibly popular among women. The researchers are currently conducting additional statistical analyzes using previously collected data. They seek to confirm the hypothesis that there are subgroups of people who have a specific combination of sexual fantasies.
