What is exhibitionism
“Expositionism is a condition in which a person experiences sexual arousal from the fantasy of being naked or having someone watch them perform sexual activity,” explains Indigo, AASCT Certified Sex Therapist, Conder, LMFT, CST.
Exhibitionists who view exhibitionism as a lifestyle and unusual topic carefully select their target audience and create exhibits that are short, unobtrusive and clearly unintentional.
It is a fetish and many practitioners consider it an art form. Many nightclubs and gothic bars encourage mild exhibitionism to enhance the atmosphere of the establishment.
Some people like to show off in front of large crowds, usually at sporting events. They love to use the Internet to distribute explicit videos and photos. A similar phenomenon is observed at the end of a sports competition, when in a dense crowd a woman flashes her breasts and sits on someone’s shoulder.
Statistics show that most exhibitionists are married, but these marriages are often sexually dysfunctional. Exhibitionistic behavior increases during times of stress or when the subject has free time.
Statistics of exhibitionistic disorders
Consider the following statistics about exhibitionists:
- According to experts, exhibitionistic disorder occurs in 2-4% of the male population.
- Sexually arousing exhibitionistic behavior can occur in women twice as often as in men.
- As you age, sexual preferences and behaviors may disappear.
- A recent study found that 66% of men and 57% of women fantasize about sex in public, and 82% of both fantasize about sex in public places.
- About a third of sex crimes reported to police involve exhibitionism.
- About 10% of exhibitionistic behavior escalates into direct sexual contact.
- Between 20 and 50% of men were arrested for exhibitionism and reoffended within two years.
- Childhood, high sexuality, and pedophilia have been associated with exposure disorder, although a cause-and-effect relationship has not been established.
- Exposureism typically begins during adolescence, but such behavior can be difficult to distinguish from normative and age-appropriate sexual curiosity later in life.
Exhibitionism and voyeurism
These two concepts actually go hand in hand. Exposure and voyeurism are like two sides of the same coin. Like exposure and voyeurism, it is very common (visual sexual stimulation is inherently arousing) and completely normal when consenting adults are involved.
As with exposure, consent is the key to voyeurism and to having these two fetishes work in harmony.
“As a voyeur, I had to learn to enjoy the arousal and pleasure of the person I wanted to see, especially in an intimate setting during group play,” says Tiana Glittersluss, teacher and co-founder of Sex Business Survival.
“Watching verbal and nonverbal cues, how his body reacts or moves, and knowing that my attention is an additional form of participation makes the contact and observation of the observer even more intimate and stimulating. The entertainment industry is worth billions of dollars. Because we live in a society where people love to perform and fans love to watch.”
Causes of exhibitionism
There are several theories regarding the origins of exposureism:
- Biological theories.
According to them, testosterone, a hormone that influences sexual attractiveness in both men and women, increases susceptibility to the development of deviant sexual behavior. Some drugs used to treat exhibitionists are prescribed to lower testosterone levels in patients.
- Learning theory.
Several studies have shown that childhood emotional distress and family dysfunction are significant risk factors for the development of exhibitionism.
- Psychoanalytic theory.
They are based on the assumption that male gender identity requires the male child to psychologically separate from the mother and therefore not identify with her as the same gender as the girl.
Exhibitionists often believe that their mothers reject them because they have different genitals. So they grow up wanting to get women to “accept” them and let them see their genitals.
There are many documented cases of men overexposed after traumatic brain injury without a prior history of alcohol abuse or sexual offending.
- History of attention deficit disorder in children (hyperactivity).
The reasons for this connection are not yet clear, but researchers at Harvard University have found that patients with multiple paraphilias are much more likely to develop ADHD in childhood than those with only one paraphilia.
Exhibitionist Tactics
Exhibitionists use a number of tactics to ensure that their victims do not appear suspicious. Most incidents occur in public places, but some suspects choose to choose more private areas (park benches or while driving a car).
Many exhibitionists do not try to hide their nature — this is an additional dangerous behavior that increases sexual arousal.
Reported cases of exhibitionism show that 63% of offenders expose their genitals, 51% spectate and masturbate, 15% use obscene language, 11% express their sexual desires verbally, and 21% express their sexual desires non-verbally.
In most cases, exhibitionists admit that they are frightened by the thought of real contact with their intended victim. Only 11% of all cases of exhibitionism involved attempts to touch the victim. Victim reactions are of course very varied and include running, laughing, verbally attacking the suspect, as well as feelings of anger, shock, fear and embarrassment.
Exhibitionists start with these reactions. However, negative feedback from the victim (such as laughter) can lead to further hostility or violence from the suspect as feelings of inadequacy are exacerbated.
Are exhibitionists dangerous?
There are three groups of influence offenders. The first type of offender is usually repressive, introverted or socially adequate. Such people are often anxious, impulsive and sexually obsessed.

Sexual fetishism was perceived as abnormal and unusual for society. At the same time, it is difficult to define the boundaries of normality. Problem.
The second group are people who are not aware of their behavior due to mental retardation, organic brain damage and/or severe alcoholism. These two groups tend to be more dangerous to themselves than to others.
The third irradiation group demonstrates superior psychopathology. For them, sexual climax is much more important than the shock of nudity, and is always accompanied by masturbation.
These people are more aggressive. They often suffer from comorbid paraphilias, including voyeurism, pedophilia, compulsive use of obscene language, and flotation (touching or rubbing someone without consent).
Some (about 10%) of this group of whistleblowers continue to have direct sexual contact with their victims, contrary to typical whistleblower behavior.
It is this third group that most often commits more aggressive sexual crimes, such as rape and sexual abuse of minors.
Signs you might like it
There are several signs that indicate a tendency toward exposure disorder.
- You fantasize about being watched.
Perhaps one of the biggest signs that you are attracted to exhibitionism is that you regularly fantasize about someone watching you. It doesn”t matter whether you are currently alone or with a partner.
If the general theme of the fantasy that brings you to climax is someone seeing you naked or performing a sexual act, then you may be an exhibitionist. Especially if that fantasy is a core element of your erotic template,” says Tramp Conger.
- Early memories of the sexual self require observation.
If you have an early memory of being seen naked, and remembering it as an adult triggers erotic feelings in you, then you are likely an exhibitionist.
Our erotic patterns are formed at an early age, and the first few times we feel sexy are not when we were sexually active. These deepest memories of our erotic essence become an integral part of what turns us on,” recalls Stray Conger.
- “You love striptease shows and other forms of sexualized culture.
Carol Quinn, a sexologist with a PhD, says: “It”s a show, but public speaking is also valuable because it gives context to impact disorders.”
- You love to put on a show in front of your partner.
Exhibitionist
Dainis Gravelis, accredited sex educator at Sexual Alpha and relationship expert, says: “Even if you haven”t used these behaviors in a sexually stimulating situation yet, these are early signs that you enjoy the feeling of people watching you.
- When shopping for lingerie, they prefer to take their partners with them.
At the same time, “your partner is feeling sexually aroused and you want to see how he reacts to you showing his body.” This is a classic example of exhibitionism and voyeurism,” says Graveris.
What to do if demons break out
“If you think you”re far from the concept of exhibitionism, or are worried that you won”t like it in real life, that”s okay. Many of our fantasies exist in our minds and bring us a lot of pleasure, but they never become reality.
However, if you decide to add variety and spice to your sexual menu without going overboard, try the following.
- Talk to your partner about what sex would be like if someone else was watching you. Discuss different scenarios and what would be most interesting,” says Stray Conger.
- Then take those fantasies into the bedroom during sex and imagine what you”re talking about actually happening. If this excites you and your partner, you can discuss what you need to do to make these fantasies come true. Discuss whether this is really what you want to do or if it”s just a fantasy.
- Incorporate revealing and sexy clothing into your wardrobe. “Use clothing to highlight those parts of the body that seem most attractive to you. “You”ll care whether someone else thinks your outfit is sexy, but what”s even more important is whether you feel dressed sexy,” advises Quinn.
- Try putting on a real strip show with the lights on. If you”re craving the thrill of real exposure, it might be a little harder to get in the dark.
- “Move in a great, smooth, teasing way. Ask your partner to keep an eye on you,” she says.
- Try mutual masturbation. Quinn also recommends trying mutual masturbation, where two partners masturbate at the same time, enjoying the pleasure of self-pleasure and seeing both enjoy themselves.
- Try sex parties and group sex scenarios. Once you”ve learned the basics of communication and added a few exposure fantasies to your bedroom, it may be time to take things to a higher level. Don’t do this on the street and don’t scare people away,” sexologists remind us.
Stars who have exhibitionist tendencies
