Despite the established opinion, our distant ancestors were much more liberated than is commonly believed. Moreover, both men and women had the right to choose equally. It’s amazing how the meaning of some concepts can change. Thus, the word “fornication” now has a negative connotation. For our ancestors, on the other hand, this meant only the beginning of a choice. And indeed: marriage is a responsible issue. So why not evaluate some contenders in all respects? And in this sense, the phrase “a girl ripe for fornication” is not at all offensive. Instead, she says that the girl has matured and become wise enough to make a choice (or so you hope).
By the way, back in the 6th century, men were in no hurry to share the victory of conquering the “female bed.” And if at the same time women choose further, then why do they brag: “Guys, they tried me, let’s go and find out what’s better”?
And after some time, the unleashing of digging became not a period of self-determination for the fair half of humanity, but its evil. With the active development of Christianity in Rus’, sexual relations with unmarried girls and widows began to be called “debauchery.”
