Sex Education: Two Decades Ago and Now

Before sex education was included in the school curriculum (a practice that only began in the 1920s), students had to learn about sex from outside sources. These could include religious pamphlets, books, or the word of older children who claimed to know everything about sex. (But perhaps they didn’t.) Fast forward almost 100 years, and many changes have occurred.

even in the 1990s and early 2000s, some students were divided into two genders (girls and boys), with girls learning about menstruation, armpit hair, and pubic hair, while boys learned about erections and how to wear condoms.
I agree, sex education can be overwhelming. However, no one who is having sex for the first time wants to fail in front of their partner. Schools of that era overlooked the fact that group sex education (for both girls and boys) is better for everyone, especially for those who identify as heterosexual.
The Risks of Neglecting Sex Education
Erica Lenti, editor of This Magazine, fought against this approach to teaching. In 1998, she began working with teenagers in educational institutions. After extensive research, she concluded that separating girls from boys led to children increasingly focusing on their own gender because they didn’t know how to behave the other way and were afraid of making a gender mistake.
I went to Catholic school, and we had a book called “Perfectly Alive,” she said. We used that textbook from first to eighth grade. During those eight years, we were exposed to distorted Christian ideas about sex. There was a section that said, “Masturbation is a sin” and “If you want to touch it, you shouldn’t.”
Education or Imposture?
Segregated sex education is no longer practiced, but there are few places that actually require children to receive proper medical education. In fact, there are many schools that still allow teachers to use scare tactics to emphasize the negative consequences of sexual activity, such as teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. Additionally, no state requires schools to teach about sexual pleasure.

there is still a long way to go to say with complete confidence that absolutely all children know about sexuality and sexual health and that their understanding is not distorted and does not consist of prejudices and clichés. Listed below are some of the concepts we teach today in sex education that did not exist just 20 years ago.

The Concept of Consent
McLean explains that in previous generations, consent was not a topic of conversation. Initiators always initiated intentions and were unaware of their partner’s desires. Often these were men.

Over the past few decades, the world has made significant progress in sex education, but there is still room for improvement. Many educational institutions still have an incomplete sex education system, and children are not receiving the full range of necessary knowledge, forcing them to actually learn, which is not always successful.
