In a new study from the US National Academy of Sciences, scientists set themselves the task of finding similarities and differences in the facial expressions of people from different cultures experiencing different emotions.

To do this, they used facial animation software. Forty participants from two different cultures (European and Chinese) had to look at 3, 600 images of facial expressions and match them with emotions. They also rated the strength of the expressions, ranging from very weak to very strong.
The findings turned out to be very unusual. Therefore, some facial expressions correlate with the same emotion regardless of gender and culture. However, others were often associated with different and sometimes opposing emotions.
The most convincing results were obtained with two unusual emotion patterns. The results showed that “frowning in pain” is universal for all people and both genders. However, the type of orgasm is not.

Dangerous headache
According to the author, these cultural differences are consistent with modern theories of “ideal affect.” Westerners should appreciate the state of excitement and enthusiasm that is often associated with wide-open eyes and mouths. Thus, orgasmic states may be significantly correlated with states of pleasure and corresponding facial expressions.
On the other hand, East Asians tend to be peaceful and content. For them, orgasm is a quiet pleasure with a smile and closed eyes.
