A study published in the journal Psychological Science provides insight. We don”t realize how strong the connection is between our sense of well-being and the consistency of our sex life.

“We found that the frequency with which participants had sex did not seem to have a fundamental impact on the degree of well-being of the relationship. But when it comes to spontaneous reactions, a completely different picture emerges,” says Lidsey Hicks of the University of Florida.

From an evolutionary perspective, frequent sex with a regular partner creates a sense of attachment and security necessary for the well-being of future offspring. And yet people refuse to talk about it directly. Perhaps, scientists believe, this is due to the taboo on open discussion of intimate issues.

This man is handsome and generous. This girl is attractive. Would you like to become a lover? Perhaps you have a basic relationship. Perhaps you are.

For the experiment, 216 newlyweds were asked to complete a special task. A word is displayed on the screen in front of each participant. Pressing the corresponding button allowed you to quickly get an answer — “positive” or “negative”. However, before each word appeared, the man noticed a photo of his partner on the screen — it appeared for only three seconds.

In conditions where speed is necessary, we act without thinking — and the faster this reaction, the stronger the associative connection between the word and the image of a loved one (in this experiment). Slow reactions to a combination of negative words and images of a partner are also indicators of a secure emotional connection of love.

Although the survey found no link between frequency of sex and participants” subjective sense of well-being, the experience of words and pictures suggests that such a link certainly exists.

Deep down, some people are still unhappy around their partners, but they are not ready to admit it,” Lindsay concluded.

Sex and relationships. How not to spoil it?
