Protest or fashion statement?

While prejudice against women who don”t shave still persists, a radically different new movement emerged in the US in 2018 and is quickly gaining momentum.

Inspiring photos with the hashtags #bodyhair, #bodyhairdontcare and #womenwithbodyhair may also appear on Instagram.

Photos of Julia Roberts” hairy armpits from 1999 have surfaced on social media. Many other celebrities such as Laura Leung (Madonna”s daughter), Madonna, Scout Willis (Bruce Willis” daughter) and Miley Cyrus have also shown a passion for nature on social media.

What”s the point of this? No, we”re not talking about saving money on razors. By acknowledging and supporting the fact that all women have body hair, and that some of us choose not to hide it, we can help women stop judging their bodies and gain a more honest view of real women.” Georgina Gourley of Billy Razor Maker.

From this perspective, ten women proudly share their personal reasons for stopping shaving their body hair and how it impacted their self-image.

10 hairy women about their choice

I stopped shaving my body hair when I played the male role in a play a few years ago. My hair didn”t bother me at all! I realized that I shaved it because I felt a certain pressure. Sometimes people advise me to shave off unwanted hair, but I don”t think much of it. I love my body hair and who I am. He makes me feel beautiful, feminine and strong.”

  • “I feel freer and more confident in myself” — Laura J.

“I stopped waxing for my role in the spring of 2018. There were parts of my body that I openly challenged and others that really opened my eyes to the taboo of female body hair.

After a while, when I got used to it, my naturalness began to bring me a lot of pleasure. In addition, the discomfort that usually occurs during hair removal has completely disappeared. Of course, I began to feel independent and confident, but those around me were sincerely surprised why I decided to do this and not that. Then I realized that we still have a lot to go through so that we can get to know each other as we really are. Then I remembered #Januhairy and decided to try it.

My friends and family fully supported me in this! I had to explain why I was doing this and most people found it strange!

When I first stopped shaving my excess body hair, my mother began to wonder if I was being lazy or not trying to prove a point. But is it lazy if you just don”t want to shave? Why should I explain anything to anyone?

Thanks to the media, hair has become considered undesirable. People use razors, wax and lasers to mercilessly remove.

Once I talked openly about this with my mom, she realized how ridiculous these questions were. Eventually, if you repeat the same thing over and over again, it becomes normal. Now she”s going to support #Januhairy too. It”s kind of a challenge! This is not malicious propaganda, but a way to help every person better understand themselves and those around them.”

I stopped shaving my bikini area and legs, so now I”m natural everywhere. I feel like I don”t have to look like anyone else. I feel sexier, more alive and more confident than before when I was trying to live up to society”s expectations.

This doesn”t apply to everyone. Everyone should be able to do what they want with their body. But not everyone has the privilege — I recognize that it is my right — to wear my hair in public without risking my safety, although I do face judgment, criticism and hateful comments. I lost 4, 000 followers when I posted a photo of myself with body hair on Instagram. Now I am confident that I make the right decisions about my body, no matter what it looks like from the outside!

“After decades of suffering from armpit irritation after shaving, I decided to get rid of the rash and razor marks.” Why did I do this to myself? Did I really think calloused armpits were sexier than hairy armpits? I decided to love and accept my body as it is. Plus, razor blades are expensive, so I like to save money.”

I stopped shaving my body hair because it is part of me. Society has long told women that hair is gross and vulgar. It comes naturally to me and everyone has it, so why wouldn”t I love it?

I”m a relatively modest person, but using a razor is a chore. And it hurts a lot. I haven”t bought a razor in years and my wallet and body thank me.”

  • “To redefine beauty standards” — Jessa K., 22

Women are constantly encouraged to buy products and pay for treatments that are said to reinforce the belief that lack of hair equals beauty.

We are told that our natural bodies are not good enough. That”s why it”s important to me to fight for a woman”s right not to shave her body hair. Rather, for their right to decide for themselves where to shave and where to leave their hair. For example, I can pluck my eyebrows, but I can”t touch the hair above my upper lip. We don”t shave our armpits or legs.

At the end of the day, what we women do with our bodies is our choice. And if we decide to keep a small mustache or hairy legs or shave once a week, it is our choice, not a society of self-righteous people who like to dictate. By maintaining this attitude, I hope to gradually get rid of the little scared girl who sits inside me and is terribly afraid that someone will notice the extra hair on my body.

I gave up hair removal about five years ago. This coincided with the realization of my sexual identity. “Once I came to terms with my sexuality, I started to get used to my body and what it felt like to be inside of me. I think it”s important to be “queer” and be comfortable with who you are.

Young, impressionable people (like my six-year-old sister) noticed that I was different from other women my age. It”s normal! And yes, she accepts it much more than anyone else in my family! I feel like a confident, mature woman with full body hair.”

“I actually gave up razors in November because I thought it was fun. But honestly, it wasn”t easy for me. When my hair got longer and thicker, I wanted to shave it every time I showered.

From a very early age we are taught to be absolutely even. This is the norm and a common stereotype. So I started to fight him. And yes, I still refuse to shave. Because I want to confront the social standards of beauty that have been ingrained in me since childhood and change the way I see beauty in myself.”

I refused to shave for years. Because it makes me feel sexy, confident and liberated. It”s so simple. And this is a choice that each of us must make.

My family, as well as some of my childhood friends, have their own opinions on this matter, but it is my choice and I must defend it. And I won”t date someone who can”t share my point of view on this issue with me (or anyone who doesn”t think my hair is sexy.”

I just have body hair. And for me this is the main thing. I feel comfortable with the way I treat your body. Should I leave everything as is or completely remove it? This is my personal choice. And it doesn”t affect my self-esteem at all. By and large, I care about this more than the inexorably strict standards of beauty.”
