If you discover they”re lying, controlling, or clingy, there”s no reason to believe they”ll treat you any differently. Despite what someone with a narcissistic personality might say, your needs are likely irrelevant. Moreover, if you try to raise the issue, you may encounter obstacles. The initial phase of managing someone with a narcissistic personality is simply being patient with them—there”s very little you can do to change it. When dealing with a narcissist, you can also take a broader perspective and look at the bigger picture. You can”t control or change them, but you can control how their actions affect you. Ask yourself what”s most important in a given situation. A narcissist is gifted at engaging you, immersing you in “their” reality, their stories, and their confessions. Try to see this as you take a step back to look at the bigger picture.
- Set clear boundaries
A person with a narcissistic personality can be very narcissistic. They may think they are qualified enough to go where they need to go, steal your things, or tell you how you should feel. They may offer you spontaneous guidance and involve recognition of what you have done. Or, on the other hand, force you to discuss personal things in an open environment. They may also have a weak sense of individual space, so they will overcome many restrictions because they do not see them. This is the reason why you must be clear about the boundaries that you need. Why would the consequences matter to them? Because a person with a narcissistic personality usually only begins to focus when something begins to affect them personally. Let the narcissist know the consequences of stepping out of line with you and make sure it is not an idle threat. Or they won”t believe you.
