This was largely facilitated by the fact that a woman’s infidelity called into question the male father in relation to the children growing up in the family, and, accordingly, the heir to all property and the successor of the family.
In modern countries, attitudes towards adultery vary, as does the general concept of the ethics of illicit sexual relations.
Russia
Here, the provisions of the marriage union are governed by the provisions of the Family Code. Its very first article is a guarantee of a free and voluntary union of men and women. Thus, it also guarantees the free termination of mutual desire or the desire of one of the spouses. At the same time, the state guarantees second protection for the spouse and common children.
The Code does not contain a list of possible grounds for divorce. It is true that individual families may have compelling personal reasons for divorce, and only the spouses within them can identify such needs.
The only thing that is provided for by the legal code is an exemption from alimony for the maintenance of the second spouse if the latter has shown his unworthy behavior in the family. Helpers may also be subject to misconduct (Articles 92 and 119).
In some cases, this is followed by bodily harm or even the death of one of the spouses, and infidelity in marriage is already considered a criminal offense in the Russian Federation, and not in the family. Among them there are articles about murder causing grievous bodily harm, committed in a state of passion. Unfortunately, it is within the framework of this article that the courts consider numerous cases of adultery.
It”s usually not surprising how easy it is for one spouse to suppress his anger when he catches his significant other in bed with the other spouse (or others). Of course, you can’t think of anything else other than hitting yourself over the head with a vase of flowers. Therefore, it is not surprising that when considering such cases, courts take into account the mitigating circumstances of the defendant.
However, the attitude towards adultery in society is very interesting. This is due to the fact that only 64% of adult Russian citizens condemn adultery. The rest treat fornication as a completely normal phenomenon.
Other countries
However, in many countries there is a list of serious reasons, clearly defined by law, for starting divorce proceedings. The first such document, dated March 21, 1804, was called the Napoleonic Code. It was also known as the Civil Code of French Citizens.
Its interpretation of adultery was very vague. Thus, if the wife was unfaithful, this was a valid reason for divorce. If the husband was unfaithful, the wife could be denied divorce proceedings. The only exception was if a man brought his mistress to his regular home.
In many third world countries, extramarital sex, including fornication and debauchery, is still persecuted to this day. Again, the punishment for women is much harsher than for members of the stronger sex who commit adultery. An unfaithful spouse can easily be stoned to death in the city”s central square. Ironically, in Nigeria and Pakistan, women are punished for adultery, even if they were raped.

Judaism
In the Old Testament, fornication is strictly defined and means punishment after fornication, that is, death. Indeed, in practice the Jews applied such punishments very harshly, since there was no strong evidence of treason. Of course, because of such strict laws, all campaigns to the left were carefully hidden.
Communication with married women is prohibited by both the Torah and Jewish law of halakhah. According to them, according to the law, a man has no right to have sexual relations with a woman who is not his wife. Christianity

By the way, the only reason for divorce in the New Testament is adultery in marriage. The Apostolic Canon, the Doctrine and the Jerusalem Charter regard adultery as a serious crime. It was punishable by the imposition of strict church penance, and in some cases by complete excommunication from the Church.
Islam
As with other religious laws, the Islamic view of adultery is more complex. All sexual relations between citizens who do not participate in marital intercourse are identified with it.
Every person who commits adultery is punished with 100 lashes. Not everyone is able to endure this, and for many, accordingly, this is equivalent to the death penalty.
Indeed, in principle, the death penalty can also be applied to unmarried women, despite the fact that this is contrary to the Koran and the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad.
