Girls in a brothel in Kandapara: life, work, money
Girls in brothels, romance, an ocean of pleasure and sex. All this is shrouded in an aura of intimate secrecy and is promoted by the film industry, TV series and pornographic films. Kandapar is the oldest brothel in Bangladesh, serving men for 200 years.

Romanticized image
For a long time, the image of a brothel girl was romantic. In films, she was shown as a luxurious woman in a dress, the corset of which lifted her ample breasts and tightened her waist. She languidly descends the stairs, beckoning the man to take her to a mysterious four-poster room. She takes off her dress, revealing her beautiful body covered in lace lingerie. After a short foreplay, violent sex begins, worse than any pornography. Most TV series, be it the famous Game of Thrones or Black Flag, feature public women. Men fantasize and dream of experiencing the joys of sex with a sophisticated beauty who, at least once, knows exactly how to give him pleasure. They don”t believe that these girls” lives are all about satisfying other people”s desires. Only in the last decade have photographers brought public attention to girls in brothels. Articles were published in obscure journals and essays appeared on websites. But only Sandra Hoyne was able to convey the bitter fate that brought girls and women to such a place. “I worked as a journalist for two years, but quit my job after covering a brothel in Bangladesh. I remember the women”s eyes, full of pain and suffering, their fate and the vile and belligerent men. I still get goosebumps. My husband told me to role-play as if I were in the brothel and he was my client. A terrible scandal broke out that split our relationship. We don”t talk now.”
Kandapara — heaven for men and hell for women
Bangladesh is unique in this regard. After all, this is perhaps the only Muslim country where prostitution is legalized. Tangail is famous for its oldest brothel, Kandapara. For 200 years, girls in brothels have been making other people”s wishes come true. Five years ago it was demolished, but has now been rebuilt. The eviction of workers was declared illegal. After all, many of them were born, raised and had children here. After the house was demolished, they had nowhere to go. The industry of paid pleasures and prostitution is not condemned, but accepted, like any other work. Members of the Women”s Lawyers” Association defended and restored the right to search for brothels. Kandapar was surrounded by a two-meter wall. Completely different hierarchies, with their own rights and laws. It”s like an independent city-state. Kiosks, teahouses, traders. “For six years I studied various brothels and brothels in countries where it is legal. We noticed that the girls who visited at an older age retained their individuality and self-determination. Harsh rules in the Muslim world force girls to go to brothels, where they have more rights and freedoms. Girls in brothels are not an accident. Their relatives sell them, and they themselves run away from their cruel husbands. Poverty brought more than 30% of women here.
Prostitution is officially only permitted for girls aged 18 and over. But in practice these rules are not followed. They appeal to 14 year old “bondage girls” by choosing:
- Peasants
- Politicians
- Police officers;
- Workers
- Teenagers.
Some come for the pleasure of love, while for others it is more important to gain the attention of a simple woman. Some men just drink strong drinks with women and talk all night. The story of 17-year-old Kajol won the hearts of millions after the release of Sandra Hoyne”s photo project. For nine years, the girl continued to marry the man who beat and raped her. Her aunt rescued her from the relationship and sold her to a brothel. She gave birth to a son with one of her clients and returned to work two months later. 14-year-old ASMA was born here in a brothel. She danced for her clients, but from the age of 14 she began to serve them, as the hostesses ordered. The demand for young girls is too great for hostesses to enforce an age limit. Moreover, the number of modern clients is not limited. In the photo project, ASMA is represented by a heavily painted bed with two men of different ages. Paki shared her story with the photographer. She spoke about her early marriage at the age of 12, arranged by her parents. That same year, she fled her husband”s cruelty and violence. A man picked up a girl on the street and sold her to a brothel. Now, at 15 years old, she continues to pay off her debts to her mistresses.
Summing up
Here she cannot complain, cry or ask for freedom. Having dealt with her obligations, the girl can leave, but she will not go anywhere. They spend most of their time with their clients, fulfilling their whims and desires. How romantic do they seem now? Not all girls in brothels suffer from their situation.
