Attachment theory provides an important framework for understanding partnership dynamics in romantic relationships across the lifespan. Because intimacy primarily helps regulate emotions, attachment theory helps explain how people cope with stressful or threatening situations in the context of sexual relationships.

Stress and intimacy are significant variables in light of attachment theories. Stress is a major trigger for the activation of attachment strategies, causing intimacy-seeking behavior focused on achieving security. Presumably, the feeling of closeness is a consequence of this feeling of security.

A paper by Lankveld and colleagues, published in the June issue of the journal Sex and Marride Therapy, examines intimacy as a predictor of sexual desire. Is there a connection between sexual desire and intimacy? Explanation below.

Triangle of love

Before we talk about the importance of intimacy in a romantic relationship, we must first define intimacy. To do this, it is useful to turn to the love triangle theory. Robert Sternberg suggests that love consists of three elements: duty, passion and emotional intimacy.

  • Commitment: One person”s decision to love another. Responsibility to maintain loving relationships.
  • Passion: The motives, drives, and drives that lead to romantic attraction and sex.
  • Virgo: a sense of communication, intimacy and warmth.

Emotional intimacy, on the other hand, can be thought of as an emotional investment in the romantic partner and the romantic relationship itself.

Moreover, intimacy is important not only for the romantic element, but also for other forms of love (for example, friendly and ideal love) and other types of intimate relationships (for example, between close friends, parents, children, siblings). Intimacy also plays a special role in sexual relationships.

The connection between intimacy and sexual desire

The study involved 134 people with an average age of 42. The average relationship duration was approximately 15 years. Participants were asked to complete a short questionnaire 10 times a day, 7 days a week (in response to a randomly generated time signal).

Additionally, all subjects completed a diary immediately upon waking and before bed. The diary questions assessed sexual desire, intimacy, stress associated with daily activities, and attachment orientation (i. e., avoidance of anxious attachment and affection).

Sexual desire was assessed using the following items (referring to a person”s feelings and motives when they hear a healthy signal): “I want sex,” “I feel sexually aroused,” and “I am ready for sex.”

Sexual fantasies are not something distant, shameful, or forbidden. Dirty thoughts shape our sexuality and influence our personality traits.

Results were assessed using the following five items.

Distress associated with daily hassles was measured by summing the scores of the following two items (for the activity the person was currently performing): “I want to do something different in relation to this” and “This requires some effort.”

Like attachment and love avoidance, attachment orientation is considered a relatively stable trait, so it was measured only at the beginning of the study. The 36-item Experiences in Close Relationships (ECR) questionnaire was used.

Results showed that the level of closeness to daily problems and worries did not predict sexual desire. Levels of closeness did predict sexual desire after an hour and a half (this was no longer true and was not true after three hours).

It is unclear how closeness enhances sexual desire. In particular, it is not fully understood how emotional intimacy can increase passion and sexual desire in romantic relationships in such a short time. However, whatever the mechanism, the effect is relatively short-lived (i. e., three hours), so it appears that intimacy must be resumed regularly to stimulate sexual desire. Given the importance of intimacy, the next question is how to establish and strengthen it.

How to establish intimacy

Deep respect for your partner.

  • Endless happiness of the couple.
  • Desire to promote each other”s well-being -.
  • The ability to rely completely on your partner in difficult times.
  • Understanding
  • The opportunity to share your wealth and confidential thoughts with your partner.
  • Giving and receiving emotional support.
  • Intimate communication;
  • So if you have low sexual desire in your current relationship, you need to think about how close you are with your partner. Do you think the person you have chosen understands you? Can you really rely on it in difficult situations? Do you feel comfortable sharing your innermost thoughts and feelings with him?

Factors that can negatively affect intimacy include neglect of the partner”s interests or the relationship itself, poor communication, lack of trust, and many personal factors (for example, personal insecurities).

Think of romantic relationships as living systems. If a partner ignores internal problems and becomes indifferent and alien, the relationship begins to die a slow death.

Of course, you can”t be in close proximity (or revive) right away, lest the alienation happen overnight. Creating intimacy in a relationship requires time and effort on the part of both partners. And one of the main ways to increase intimacy over time is to spend as much time as possible every day — and to do it in a way that is friendly to each other and to your partner.

It sounds very simple, but many couples find that daily worries and responsibilities leave little time for each other. This means they may have to give up personal hobbies or cut back on work responsibilities in order to meet their commitments to spend time together.

However, the study”s findings provide evidence that increased intimacy can increase sexual desire. And they provide additional motivation for couples to strive to create intimacy and spend more time with each other.
