Group Sex and Its Features
Before attempting to answer these difficult questions, it’s worth examining the phenomenon of group sex itself. This type of physical intimacy is believed to have been practiced in prehistoric times, when orgies predominated in sexual relations. Today, group sex is any form of sexual intimacy between three or more people, in which each participant has the opportunity to engage in sexual contact with one of the other participants. A synonym for group sex is promiscuity.
Fantasies about group sex are powerful because they associate people with an ancient, primal state. This is why they possess enormous energetic potential. However, their realization can also evoke an equally strong sense of guilt, as it violates social norms and taboos.
J. Lehmiller’s Study
American sexologist J. Lehmiller surveyed over 4,000 people to find out what they thought about sexual dreams and intimacy in groups. This format proved to be one of the most exciting triggers in terms of fantasy. However, in terms of implementation, perceptions of group sex here vary greatly by gender and sexual orientation.

Lehmiller divided all survey participants into four groups.
- Heterosexual women.
- Heterosexual men, and
- Women characterized by any degree of homosexuality (lesbians, bisexuals, pansexuals, and other forms);
- Men who also reported this or that expression to a member of their own sex.
It turned out that heterosexual women were the least likely to talk with others about sexual fantasies related to promiscuity. They accounted for only 52%. In this regard, the second group of women had almost the same indicators as men: 65% were willing to share their fantasies (in both male groups, this figure was 63-66%).

Heterosexual women were also less likely than others to realize their dreams of group sex. Only 8% did so. By comparison, for men, this figure was 15%. Among women of all sexual orientations, the figure was 16%; among men of the second category, it was 25%. These data indicate that homosexual men are almost three times more likely to dream about group sex than heterosexual women.
Regardless of category, female respondents also reported positive experiences when they openly discussed such fantasies with their partners. Men with same-sex preferences reported that their partners’ reactions to such conversations were more positive.
These results are very interesting and may shed light on several important issues. First, non-heterosexual men are most likely to share their orgiastic fantasies. Furthermore, they report more positive experiences acting on these fantasies. Heterosexual women are the opposite group of men. They are the least likely to talk about their fantasies and act them out. And, as a rule, straight women are the least likely to have a positive experience with group sex.
How to explain these results
Lehmiller believes that these results may be related to the higher prevalence of promiscuous fantasies among men. And, as a rule, men are more likely to imagine group sex and, accordingly, talk about it more often.
To explain women’s lower inclination toward group sex, scientists put forward the following hypotheses. There is a classic difference between heterosexual men and women regarding these fantasies. Women often dream of orgies similar to male-male sex, while men prefer FFM. In fact, it is the FFM variety that is more often realized, as modern society continues to be more accepting of male preferences. Fearing this, women do not initiate such conversations with their religious partners. Therefore, openness in this regard and the likelihood of actual group sex may depend on social stereotypes.
The study also shows that heterosexual men and women have radically different ideas about how group sex should work.
