Research and its results: exposing folk myths
Psychologists Cindy and David Bass from the University of Texas asked 442 people aged 17 to 52 to answer just one question: “List all the reasons why you or your friends have sex.”
The results of the study turned out to be very interesting. Society believes that women have sex to bond emotionally with their partner and strengthen the relationship. Men, on the contrary, supposedly strive to improve relationships in order to get sex. There is, of course, some truth to this. However, most of the reasons listed by men and women in the above-mentioned surveys overlap.
Reports from women interviewed
Reasons why girls have sex (from most noticeable to least common):
- “I found men attractive.”
- “I wanted to have fun.”
- “I liked it.”
- “I wanted to show my affection.”
- “I wanted to show my love for the person.”
- I was very excited and wanted to leave.”
- “I realized that I fell in love.”
- “It was a very opportune moment.”
- “I wanted to please my man.”
- “I wanted emotional intimacy.”
- It was very interesting — a real adventure.”
- I was delighted with the look of him.”
- The situation was very romantic.”
- He made me feel so sexy — a real sex goddess.”

This question plagues many men. Some seek advice from friends, others turn to psychological forums, where they turn out to be not the most competent.
Motivation of the stronger sex
The list of reasons given by men is as follows:
- “I was physically attracted to her.”
- Sex with her made me happy.”
- “I wanted to have fun.”
- I wanted to show that this is important to me.”
- “I wanted to achieve a release, to get rid of the tension.”
- “Only to please her”;
- “My mistress had a very exciting appearance.”
- The situation pushed me towards sex.”
- “I really wanted emotional intimacy.”
- “The sex was very exciting, I wanted some kind of adventure.”
- I just fell in love with her.”
- I needed this experience.”
- “She made me feel very attractive and sexy.”
Thus, this study finally dispels the myth that men are sexually obsessed and women simply see it as a way to improve relationships. Yes, beautiful women also have a sex drive — stronger than men.

Rare causes: highlighting possible social problems and risks
In the United States, a lot of attention is paid to potential problems in society. Therefore, the authors of this study decided to study the common reasons for sex. In women, as it turned out:
- The desire to infect others with sexually transmitted diseases (perhaps this motive requires close attention from both sexologists and sociologists).
- Sex for money;
- Opportunity to get promoted (thus, always a career through bed).
- It was a rite of passage into any organization.
- Humiliate yourself;
- For religious reasons.
In men, the most rare causes are:
- To obtain medications;
- To spread sexually transmitted diseases.
- Punish yourself for wrongdoings.
- Breaking up a relationship with your current partner.
- Because the aggressors do not mean this threat (obviously, we are talking about homosexual sexual contact for the purpose of coercion).
- For religious reasons.
As for gender differences, at some point they did exist. For example, Frank”s appearance often evokes sexual desires in men more often than in women. The desire for sexual sensations was typical for girls.
