More than 1, 600 newlywed couples took part in a representative study conducted in the United States. They were all heterosexual and compared the frequency with which people said they achieved orgasm with the frequency with which their partners said they achieved orgasm. Essentially, a comparison was made between the number of orgasms actually achieved and the partner”s (wife and husband”s) assumption that peak pleasure had been reached.

Scientists have found that only 14% of women misunderstand the frequency with which their husbands experience orgasm. In contrast, 42% of men misreported their wives” orgasm frequency (17% underestimated and 25% overestimated). There are likely several explanations for this gap in maladaptive perception. One of them, of course, is the fact that male orgasm usually coincides with ejaculation. While some women do experience liquid ejaculation during orgasm, this is not always considered a reliable indicator of the same. Consequently, heterosexual men may view other factors (e. g., sounds, facial expressions) as cues to orgasm and make assumptions based on them. And let”s not forget that women fake orgasm more often than men. Because they still believe that their inability to find satisfaction is their own problem. Or they worry that not having another orgasm will hurt their partner”s self-esteem.
