New research on the subject suggests that there are several different reasons why people who identify as heterosexual may have same-sex experiences. The study was conducted among university students who reported that their last hookup partner was of the same gender. They found that more than one in ten men and one in four women identify as heterosexual. Moreover, these people appear to fall into several distinct categories.

For example, some had a same-sex relationship, they really liked it, and they wanted more. In contrast, others did it just for show—a form of “performance bisexuality.” They wanted to appear “special” or “advanced.”
