Female beauty looked like something unusual, veiled, unclear. Today the whole world is familiar with female attractiveness, and competition organizers increasingly have to come up with new types of competitions.
The emergence of beauty pageants
The very origin of this type of competition goes back to ancient times. It is based on Greek mythology. According to the records and legends that have come down to us, the first beauty contest was held between the Olympic goddesses — Hera, Athena and Aphrodite.
To make everything as fair and just as possible, the goddesses appointed a judge from among the people — a shepherd named Paris. It was he who chose the first winner of the beauty contest, Aphrodite, who became the eternal patroness and protector of the young man and all his people.
In addition, there is indirect evidence that in the ancient city of Troy a competition was also held to determine the most beautiful girl. Candidates were judged by representatives of all classes and fields of activity, from artists to soldiers and peasants.
The earliest documented competition between beauties took place in the 5th century BC in a city called Corinth. Kyperis, the ruler of these lands at that time, ordered not only to hold competitions, but also to create a real annual holiday in honor of the earth goddess Gaia.
The whole country appreciated the initiative of Kyperis so highly that this holiday began to be held throughout Ancient Greece. The most impressive were the festivals and competitions of beautiful women in Athens. However, after the celebration of the central part of the beauty pageant and the Day of the Earth Goddess, it unofficially moved to the island of Lesbos in the Aegean Sea.
Some time after this, a tradition arose in ancient Babylon of organizing beauty contests. Overall, it was a traditional competition in which noble women competed for the right to be called the most beautiful in the kingdom. However, Babylonian beauty contests had one distinctive feature: the participants in the competition were not only the most beautiful women in the kingdom, but also the most beautiful women in the kingdom. After the completion of the competition, an auction was held, similar to modern auctions. Noble men could exchange the winner from their family and take her as a wife.
Residents of ancient states such as China and Malaysia also held their own competitions between beauties. However, they were significantly different from all similar competitions around the world. Competitions between young girls have long been held (and are still held to this day) in numerous tribes in Australia and neighboring islands. They compete with each other to win the attention of the most “eligible” groom in the tribe and the opportunity to become the mother of his child. In some places they strive for victory with the same zeal with which they feed a wild beast as a sacrifice.
African competitions between beauties also distinguished them from everyone else. Traditionally, African tribesmen would choose the most beautiful African woman at an annual ceremony. Only now they do not pay attention to the appearance, face and skills of young women.
There were people. They were only interested in the size of the priest. Most of the winners, in fact, had so much dignity of their own that they could not get up to walk around without someone else. But the impressive volume was considered by Africans as a guarantee of healthy and strong offspring.
A kind of beauty contest was also organized in Russia. These were not simple competitions, but real holidays dedicated to the marriage of kings and princes. Thus, the ruler of the state was looking for his wife. In addition, beauties from all over Russia were invited to the competition. Moreover, the level of social status, nobility and wealth of her family did not matter. Only beauty and health were necessary for the birth of a healthy heir.

Until 1888, all beauty pageants were essentially local. The first competition, which laid the foundation for the world competition, took place that same year on September 19 in one of the best places in Belgium. Most of the organizers never guessed what kind of phenomenon they created that day. When you look at this competition, you will notice some major differences as it moves into modern times.

This was proven by the first winner of the German competition for the title of the most beautiful girl in the country in 1909. Initially, she was an ordinary tobacconist from East Prussia. This example influenced many girls across Germany.
Subsequently, the Americans secured the opportunity to host the event in their homeland. However, the extensive preparation paid off — it was the competition held in the United States that subsequently became the benchmark for the entire world. The first competition took place in September 1921, and, of course, the first winner emerged. She was a girl named Margaret Gorman. She was the daughter of a US Department of Agriculture official.
It is worth noting that this was the first public display of half a woman”s body in the world. The contestants performed in several bathing suits, allowing their beauty to be appreciated on a deeper level. At the same time, Miss America was a model of modesty and purity. According to the terms of the contract, the winner was required to tour the country a year after the pageant ended as an advertising agent.
During this annual tour, the girls were subject to severe restrictions. They were prohibited from attending social events or appearing with alcoholic beverages. The main requirement was to maintain the image of a young, chaste woman, a discreet virgin.
A special committee closely monitored compliance with these rules. If any of these contractual conditions were violated, the winner would lose the right to continue working with the organizers, and the award and title would be forfeited.
