Research explains why women fantasize about rape

One recent large survey found that about 90% of women have fantasized about being raped at least once, and almost two-thirds have fantasized about it quite often. This does not mean that women actually want to be sexually coerced.

Many of us imagine erotic scenes that we don”t actually want to experience. But why do so many sane women consider themselves victims of rape? It turns out that such thoughts reflect their erotic comfort.

Research into the prevalence of such fantasies suggests that they play a special role in the sex lives of many adult women and college students. Many studies have also shown that the fairer sex, who are the most open about sex, the most adventurous and the most confident in their intimate lives, are often susceptible to rape fantasies.

The frequency with which participants imagined themselves being raped varied widely: 33% imagined themselves being raped less than once a year, 26% several times a year, 20% once a month, 11% weekly, and 9% more than four times a year.

Similar studies were conducted by psychologists several decades ago to understand why some women dream about rape. It is generally accepted that women who described themselves as raped really wanted to be in such a situation. This theory was completely refuted, as it was found that sexual fantasies do not necessarily reflect real desires, especially intentions.

Today, psychologists offer an alternative explanation for women”s erotic fantasies.

1. The most popular theory states that for many women, sexual desires cause feelings of guilt. They cannot enjoy sexual fantasies without feeling anxious and ashamed. Therefore, women imagine being forced into sexual intercourse, which relieves them of some responsibility for their sexuality. In this way, they avoid the feelings of guilt and remorse that arise as a result of sexual desire.

However, contrary to the most generally accepted opinion among psychologists regarding fantasies arising from feelings of guilt, many researchers consider it the most unjustified. Women who are particularly bothered by feelings of guilt about their sexuality have the lowest rates of fantasies about forced sexual intercourse.

Research shows that rape fantasies are most common in another category. Women who were assertive and sexually open reported that many other imaginary scenarios made them aroused. In second place were women seeking sexual attraction. They also often dream of becoming strippers.
