Inside the body, sperm remain viable for five days after sex. If sperm is present in the uterus or penile tube at the time of ovulation, pregnancy occurs. For most women, ovulation occurs around day 14 of the cycle. However, if you have unprotected sex during your period or outside your expected fertile period, you still risk getting pregnant. - For 8-12 months, mark the start of your cycle (the first day of your period) and count the total number of days in your cycle.
- Record the days of the shortest and longest days of your cycle.
- Subtract 18 of the total number of days from the shortest cycle. For example, if your shortest cycle is 27 days, mark day 9 of your cycle. This is the first full-day window.
- To calculate the last day of your fertile period, subtract 11 from the total number of days in your longest cycle. For example, if your cycle was 30 days long, this would be day 19.
