Secrets Revealed by Couples’ Sleeping Positions

When you fall asleep in the same bed with your partner, your body language reveals a lot about your relationship. “During sleep, the subconscious takes over, and silences can provide surprisingly accurate insights into what’s going on between you,” says Patti Wood, an expert with 30 years of experience studying nonverbal language and the author of “A Guide to Reading Body Language.” Psychologists have identified and interpreted 10 key conventions that couples have unconsciously adopted.

“Spoon”

The partner hugs the other and presses firmly against the stomach on the back. In most cases, both partners have their knees bent and their legs tucked in.

Research by a relationship psychologist Corrine Sweet, a public relations expert, found that this cozy position is found in only about 18% of couples. It reflects a relationship in which one partner takes a protective stance toward the other, and isn’t afraid to appear vulnerable, demonstrating their trust.

“Free Spoon”

Initially, all couples have more physical contact in bed, but over time, the novelty of sharing mattresses wears off. According to Paul Rosenblatt, author of “Two Beds: The Social System,” couples fall asleep accustomed to the “spooning” position, but as their relationship matures, they become increasingly relaxed. Each partner wants to return to a comfortable position that can ensure sound sleep.

“Chase”

This situation is similar to the previous two, but at the same time, one partner appears to be making an effort to pursue the other partner and move to their side of the mattress.

This can represent two situations: one in which one partner is trying to return to the other, and one in which the other is trying to return to the other. However, the pursued person, who drew the short term, prefers to be pursued. According to Samuel Dunkel, author of “Sleeping Position,” this situation is also called “illegitimate sleeping”: one person retreats because the other partner needs personal space to try to control or take over.

“Tangle”

People fall asleep in each other’s arms, their arms and legs tightly intertwined. This is a touching, secretive position, even rarer than the “spooning” position. It’s adopted, for example, after lovemaking or during the intense emotions that arise at the beginning of a mutual relationship.

falling in love is like a mental disorder. It makes us dizzy and makes us do things we would never do in our right minds and with a clear head.

For a long-term relationship, this isn’t always considered a good sign, as couples sometimes fall asleep. New York psychotherapist Elizabeth Flynn Campbell argues that “partnerships can be overly dependent and destructive because people weave in and out of dreams, striving to be as close as possible.”

“Unraveling Knot”

It all starts with a “ball” that shatters shortly after both partners fall asleep. This position reflects the strongest and most durable relationships, yet only 8% of couples adopt it. Relationship expert psychologist Colin Sweet described this position as a compromise between intimacy and independence, allowing her to achieve the best of both worlds.

“Freedom Lovers”

It’s a good sign if you and your partner fall asleep with a small gap between your backs. 27% of couples adopt this sleeping position. Dr. Corrine Sweet emphasizes that people who sleep this way are “intensely connected and support the security of their partner’s rug.” The situation demonstrates a balance between intimacy and independence in their relationship.
