98% of people masturbate, are the remaining 2% lying?

How common is masturbation really? According to a recent American study, only 38% of women said they had masturbated in the past year; for men this figure was 61%. So it is clear that masturbation never modestly covers the population, as the old joke goes.

As part of the National Health and Social Survey, sociologists from the University of Chicago analyzed personal interview data from adults aged 18 to 60. Respondents were asked how often they had masturbated during the past 12 months.

Supposedly, the face-to-face format of the study was not entirely transparent, and some did not admit to their “hobbies.” However, even allowing for this possibility, the results refuted the idea that masturbation is a common sexual practice.

Age factors

Previous studies have shown that men masturbate from adolescence to middle age. This is partly true of the Chicago Study. The level of masturbation in men decreases slightly after 50 years. However, in general, men who engage in self-pleasure continue to do so in the future.

In most cases, women masturbate between the ages of 20 and 39. Their lowest rates are 18-20 years old and over 40 years old.

Personal and socioeconomic factors

Previous surveys have found that increased frequency of sexual thoughts, education, teenage sexual experimentation, and multiple sexual relationships throughout a lifetime increase the likelihood of increased masturbation. This was confirmed by a Chicago study conducted on people of both sexes.

To achieve maximum pleasure (orgasm), a woman must be safe and completely relaxed. Once this is achieved, orgasm.

Data from the current and previous surveys agree that people raised in religiously liberal or non-religious families reported masturbation more often than those raised in fundamentalist families.

A study conducted in Chicago found that white respondents were the most “enthusiastic masters.” African Americans, Asian Americans, and Pacific Islanders reported being less inclined to complacency.

Physical and emotional factors

Previous surveys have suggested that poor health reduces the likelihood of masturbation. In the latest study, this was true only for women, not for men, who continued to masturbate regardless of their health.

Self-masturbation has traditionally been considered a convenient method for people with increased libido who lack partnered sex. This study confirmed this for both men and women.

Among Americans and Europeans, masturbation is often considered a way for singles to compensate for a lack of sex in a relationship. Research refutes this assumption. Being without a partner for extended periods suppresses the desire for solo sex in both sexes. Respondents who masturbated most frequently were usually involved in sexual relationships. Coupled lovemaking is more engaging than solo sex.

Finally, sex involves both physical and emotional intimacy. In this study, the disconnect between these two elements—physical contact without emotional intimacy, or vice versa—was associated with rapid masturbation. Indeed, in women, a lack of emotional intimacy in a relationship increases the desire to masturbate.
