Social status increases testosterone levels

The journal Human Sexuality published the results of a new study by scientists from the University of Cambridge. The study demonstrates how men”s perceptions of their social status influence testosterone levels and sexuality.

The study population consisted of 38 men over 20 years of age, whose levels were measured based on.
- Hormonal levels;
- Self-esteem and competitive tendencies.
- Readiness to procreate before and after physical activity.
Saliva samples were taken from the subjects to measure hormone levels before and after physical activity. They were also asked to complete questionnaires assessing their psychological state and determining self-esteem and sexuality. The participants then competed in a canoeing race. According to the survey:
Men who scored average saw their testosterone levels increase by an average of 4. 92%.
- Losers saw their hormone levels decrease by 7. 24%.
- Winners saw their testosterone levels increase by 14. 46%.

Danny Longman, the study”s author, argues that the increase in their perceived social status caused changes in the men”s blood, increasing their desire to achieve personal reproductive function to pass on the winning gene.

The only thing left out is the desire to compete. Leadership quality depends on instinct. But while instinct depends on testosterone, the role of intelligence in competition remains unclear.
