The mature egg is released around day 14 due to a rapid rise in LH and FSH levels. It then enters the fallopian tube, where fertilization occurs. If fertilization is not achieved, the oocyte disintegrates within 24 hours. After oocyte release, the follicle thickens and becomes the “corpus luteum.”
As the egg is released, LH and FSH levels decrease. If pregnancy occurs, the “corpus luteum” continues to synthesize testosterone and progesterone, preventing the endometrial lining from shedding. If fertilization does not occur, the “corpus luteum” disintegrates, progesterone levels drop, and the first day of menstruation begins.
Ovulation vs. Cycle Length
