As psychotherapist and author Dr. Jen Mann explains, infidelity can be a bombshell between partners. “It destroys the foundations necessary for a successful relationship.” The desire to possess someone is a primal need of love, and a violation of monogamy can cause a level of resentment and anger equivalent to other types of betrayal.
What happens when you cheat?
As Dr. Mann noted, trust is the key pillar that sustains and binds any couple together, giving them a sense of invulnerability and security. Without trust, love is seriously threatened, says Los Angeles-based psychologist Dr. Yvonne Thomas. “When a partner’s beliefs are undermined, emotional and physical intimacy can become strained.
As a result, painful emotions can build up: anger, resentment, jealousy, insecurity. In most cases, this leads to a complete breakdown.” According to New York-based psychotherapist Crystal Bradshaw, deceptive perception also destroys connections because it casts doubt on the past, present, and future.
When one partner moves beyond a monogamous relationship, the other begins to suffer from self-esteem, self-doubt, and suspiciousness about decision-making. Cheating is a blow to the emotional well-being of the other person you love and perhaps strive to make happy. Dr. Mann adds, “Deceptive perceptions can cause great damage to a person’s self-esteem and make them doubt their own attractiveness and sexuality.”

Dr. Bradshaw notes that some people hope to change their personal lives, which turns out to be a disappointment. A side romance can be a way to escape a relationship. Can feelings survive after infidelity?
When this happens, Dr. Mann says it’s important to examine the full implications of infidelity to determine whether the relationship is worth continuing or whether it’s time to leave. Such a crisis can make people realize how important they are to each other and fight to maintain their feelings. Sometimes cheating can help a couple rethink their relationship and discover the flaws that caused one or the other to be unfaithful.
Dr Bradshaw says partners who work hard can reunite. They will interact with each other in ways they haven’t interacted in years or ever before.”
However, since the path of transformation and rehabilitation requires a lot of time, effort and emotion, betrayal should not be a catalyst for this kind of transformation. Moreover, deception will never be completely erased from your memory and will forever remain a part of your history together.
