What does a woman remember about a man after meeting him for the first time? This question became the topic of a study conducted at the University of Michigan by a group of scientists led by professor and doctor of psychological sciences Terence Hogan. The answer depends on whether women are looking for short-term sexual relationships or long-term ones. Evolutionary psychology suggests that a man’s physical characteristics are more important to women seeking a short-term rather than a long-term partner. In other words, reproductive goals and intentions influence people’s memories.
The study was published in the American Journal of Social and Personal Relationships. The experiment involved 125 senior students who were divided into two groups. The first half of the participants were asked to rate the man in the video as a one-night stand; the second group is to consider him as a figure of long-term, faithful relationships. Participants were then shown a video in which they selected the “average attractiveness” of a white, tall (193 cm), average-built man of 28 years old. During filming, he spoke directly to the camera about his interests, character, exercise habits, education and career aspirations. He also shared some information about his background and family.
After watching the video, the subjects took a surprise memory test, the purpose of which was to find out how many girls could remember the physical characteristics of the man and his verbal statements.

Researchers found that women who were asked to rate a man as a committed partner remembered what he said better than his appearance. Participants viewed the young man as a partner for the night, but remembered his appearance and physical characteristics more accurately than what he said.
