In some reptiles, such as many snakes and lizards, sex chromosomes cause embryos to develop into males or females. In other animals, such as crocodiles, alligators, and sea turtles, sex is determined by temperature. Bearded dragons represent a third way. In other words, a kind of evolutionary transition between the two. A laboratory study revealed that of 131 lizards caught by a group of researchers during a hot summer, 11 females did not have the “correct” set of chromosomes. They were genetically male and had metamorphosed into females.

This is the first time we”ve observed two separate systems of sexual self-determination, which are thought to have been separated by an evolutionary break. If temperature and sex chromosomes are two sides of the same coin, then we”re seeing a coin flip, says James Bull of the University of Texas at Austin.

In the face of climate change, sex reversal could have incredible consequences. Some scientists believe it”s an excellent way for species to survive. Others fear that “critical heat” could lead to the complete extinction of males.
