Jacqueline Warner of Yale University conducted a study specifically focused on the spontaneous reactions of men in a state of addiction—how they respond to sexual denial and how this causes them to suddenly become sexually aggressive.

A specific amount of alcohol (approximately 0. 08% alcohol in exhaled breath) was used for the experiment, with approximately 62 men aged 20 and older participating. Each of the remaining participants was calm.
All men were then asked to go on a date—a conversation with a virtual woman and choose options from a list of possible further actions. These decisions included both sexual and non-sexually charged options. The virtual women were programmed to consent to certain types of sexual interactions and refuse others. As the experiment participants persisted, the obstacles became more intense.

If the “girl” welcomed the offer of intimacy, the participant”s sexual desire increased. Consensual sex “happened” more often if the man stayed with the “girl” after another refusal. However, the behavior of the participants in the addiction condition differed as follows: The greater the devaluation received on the virtual date, the more persistent it was.
